Another Broody Hen.

This time it is a Cuckoo Maran who has become broody. Honestly! She is one flustered cluck! Water and feed and no nest to guard! Guess that would be hard on any momma wannabe. But at least she is not pecking at me when picked up. The hens have this special growl voice they get when they don't want to be bothered. It amazes me. It feels like the voice a mother might use before the kids learn to make their own peanut butter-jelly sandwiches. Semi-irritated and just a bit put out!

Had an idea today--well, actually yesterday. Beverly Hendrix had noticed some of the flower pictures from my front yard and said she would just like to sit out there among the flowers. So, talked to my sister-in-law and invited both of them up for a bottle or glass of tea on Wednesday afternoon. Will also send them home with fresh eggs. Beverly lives about 90 miles from here, so she can come over and spend time with one of her girls that morning or whatever. Anne has an appointment for Snoop at Petco, so she was going to be up here anyway. Of course, Henrietta is only about a thirty minute drive away from here. Anyway, it should be an interesting day.

One of the boys cut the grass for me yesterday. It is not very short, but considering that the heat is on its way, it is better to let the grass keep the roots covered rather than take a chance on frying them! Got tickled at Donny Anderson and his evaluation of the driver of the zero turn--that kid has some understanding of that machine! Donny gets to laugh at my use of machinery, but that's ok. Some of us are good at one thing, and some of us are still searching for the ONE thing. Oh well.

The mockingbird kept flying down to the ground in front of my living room window. She would spread her wings and watch to see if anything moved. Hopped a few steps and spread her wings again. Think she was trying to scare up an insect. Apparently it is keeping her pretty busy to feed these two feathered mouths! Each time she is out there, she has her beak down inside the nest. Still hoping to be able to move the little nest to a safe place when they get big enough to start hopping up to the edge of the colander. Maybe the momma bird will follow to the front porch if they are put out there. It will be tricky.

Cooked the beets that Cari Guidry brought over last night. This morning the memory of my Granddad Kennedy teaching Lewis how to eat beets came to my mind. Grannie Connie put fresh cooked beets on the table at their house while we were visiting, and Granddad handed Lewis the bowl. Lewis was trying to turn them down and said that he had never liked beets. Ah! A challenge for a granddad! "You just have never had them like they are supposed to be eaten," he said. He showed Lewis how to salt, pepper, and butter them, and Lewis actually liked them. Think his mom always put them in apple cider vinegar. They are good both ways, but salt, pepper, and butter is a mighty tasty combination.

Made a trip to Walmart this morning and got some plastic gloves so slipping the skin off the beets would not leave my hands another shade of red. As it is, my left hand has a slight purple tinge to the fingernails. Farnam wound-kote says blue lotion, but it is definitely purple. Oh well.

It has been mostly cloudy all day. It is supposed to be 97 by Thursday. Such fun. But it is June in Texas. In some places--thinking Mississippi--it is still raining boatloads. Guess griping about a bit of sunshine is silly.

The dogs' couch is nice and clean--well, the covers on the couch were nice and clean when they were put on this morning. Both dogs have a shiny coat after the baths they had yesterday. Just wish it were possible to put something on Thompson that would keep him itch free. And yes, Benadryl has been suggested, but it really makes him listless. And we are NOT going to go for any of those pills that are supposed to keep fleas and ticks off of them. Have a feeling they are as dangerous as they can be. Have used Coat Defense, too. May have to just use OFF on them. Or not. Any suggestions?

Still have some Bluebonnet seeds that need to be gathered. Maybe this evening after it cools down and the sun is not so bright. It is too wet in the mornings, and then when the clouds roll away, it gets hot in a hurry. We will see if the seeds get cut or not.

Have not turned on the computer much today, so know nothing that bothers me. Good idea not to turn on the news, huh. Even so, we can still pray for peace among men. The idea that others go to bed hungry really bothers me, but this is nothing new--just as Solomon said, "There is nothing new under the sun." Sad, but true. Maybe we should all be planting gardens and sharing with everyone we meet. In some countries, folks who have gardens hang bags with produce on their yard fences for others to come take as needed. Not a bad idea, huh.

May you all rest well and enjoy life as much as possible. God has given us great blessings. You are loved.
