The Delivery.
Market Street, the grocery store where some of us do
business here in Wichita Falls, has some of the neatest folks who deliver
groceries. Since walking around in the store just about puts me down for a
couple of hours with muscle spasms, the old woman has been having groceries
delivered about once a month. Frankly, it is worth the delivery fee. Today a
nice young man named Colton brought my groceries. Even though not one tiny
piece of meat was included in the order, the bill still came to a little over
$80 for mostly vegetables, a few cans of fruit, and lots of bottled water in
either gallon jugs or the packages of 24 bottles. Colton pointed out the cake
when he set down one bag. It only took me a minute to let him know that a cake
had not been in the order. Even let him see the recipe. He had already handed
me a small package of coffee that was a gift from the store, but he raised an
eyebrow and said that the packages in my order were all in one pile. He just loads
and delivers whatever is in those piles. Someone did not get their German
chocolate cake today. But it certainly is a tasty one!
Little free things that happen like this delivery don’t
happen very often. Usually, it is the other way around or no more than a note
to say that something was not available. If life were all about what we get for
free, we would all be sitting around howling about how unfair life seems to be.
But every day we wake up is one more free gift. And that kind of free gift is
too often taken for granted. It pleases me to be able to give eggs to friends,
family, and those who just happen to come by and stop to talk. But waking up,
breathing freely, having the good health to be able to walk around in the back
yard and listen to the hens chuckle, those things are so worth celebrating. A
free cake is quite nice, but a pain-free walk down to visit the neighbor is
absolutely wonderful.
Let’s just think about the free things today. Let’s see if
we can be grateful for the facts of our lives. Things are not ever going to be
perfectly happy and fair in this life, but look at how much we have been given!
And really, isn’t it time to acknowledge the source of those gifts! Life did
not come from some strange other or unknowable sense of beginnings. Life began
with God. Let us give the very least we can ever give Him—praise and appreciation.
Let our attitude be one of gratitude.
May God give us peace and lack of fear. He has already provided
answers before we knew to ask questions. Let not your hearts be troubled. His
gift is peace.
You are loved.
