Sometimes it does a person good to look at the past, but mostly it is is better to do it as it compares with what we can see as good changes in our attitude. So, with that in mind, will be looking at raising expectations for myself and my surroundings. No, don't expect the dust bunnies to disappear overnight. Ain't a gonna happen! In the first place, those critters multiply just like regular bunnies! And they have a pretty good head start. But one thing at a time--even it if only means cleaning out the hen house once a week--will make a good start on some changes. And yes, the coops were cleaned out again today and some diatomaceous earth put in the middle coop after things were rearranged somewhat. Tired the ol' woman out just a bit, but at least the place looked a bit more organized.
Found a hen caught inside a feed bin this morning. Not sure, but think she was only in there overnight. But boy was she ever thirsty! She had laid an egg, but she was most upset. Poor baby. Bet a feed bin never has its lid just laid on top without being fastened down ever again! She may die later, but so far she seems ok. Ah, the vagaries of living with critters.
Have some bright yellow flowers blooming in both beds now. The ones nearer to the car port are the prettiest, but the others are going to make the front bed look good as soon as the Bluebonnets give up the ghost. And that won't be long now. The poppies are still out there waving their blooms in the air, but some of the smaller ones are closer to the ground and neater. Had never seen that kind before. Not sure if they are a particular breed of poppy or if they just are stunted because of where they are growing. Whichever, they are neat.
Repotted a tomato plant this morning. It is the one that actually has tomatoes on it, but it was looking awfully droopy. Not sure if it was the wind whipping it or what. Bought a bigger pot over at Sutherlands yesterday, so that is where the 'mator plant is now. Kinda hope it makes it.
The sunflower circle out in the back yard is growing by leaps and bounds. Besides sunflowers, it contains squash plants and corn and ONE wild tomato vine. Think the hens may have planted that one for me. Chickens do that sort of thing you know. They remind me of squirrels in a way--things just come up wherever they are dropped.
People keep coming up this road and turning around. No doubt they are looking for the boat ramp parking lot where folks can get to the lake or park out there. If the signs to the dam spillway were clearer, it would probably alleviate some of this traffic. As it is, if they turn around on Jerry's concrete in front of his house, they are probably going to have a flat tire soon enough. That place is a safety hazard! Kinda wish it were possible to drag one of those magnets on wheels across that place to pick up all the nails and other sharp junk. Oh well.
Read another chapter in The Scarlet Letter so the boys would not get ahead of me. Then read some of the reviews of Fahrenheit 451. Kinda think it might be good for the boys to read the book and then see the movie, but it is hard for them to want to read AFTER seeing the movie. The two never exactly reflect the same attitude even if the story is basically the same. Think that is true no matter who wrote the book or who directed the movie. What do you think: Nineteen Eighty-four or Fahrenheit 451 first? The boys are going to flip out when they find out The Scarlet Letter has movie versions. Hawthorne is not easy to read.
One book reviewer said that if a person were unable to read Shakespeare and his peers, then "you will forfeit memory, and if you cannot remember, then you will not be able to think." Not sure if that has not already happened to some extent. We watch movies that are slanted just as much or more than what we consider "news" today. Basically Pablum for the masses. Sorry, some of us are pretty strongly opinionated.
Apparently it is the time of the year for proms. At least the dresses this year are beautiful with the young girls wearing them. And the boys all look so neat in their suits. Only went to one prom during my high school year--senior year. Mom made the gown and the slip under it. She had to take tucks and more tucks in that slip because my weight just kept falling. Not sure why. But then, stayed awfully busy back then--riding my horse and eating tuna fish instead of real meals. These girls in the pictures would all make two of me back then. Healthy looking girls! The times are definitely different.
Watered those four little passion vine slips that Donny Anderson brought the other night. Certainly hope that they make it. Still have quite a few holes dug for some other kind of flower or vine. Whatever it is has to be something non-poisonous. Too many critters around here that some plants could kill. Gave Jerry the Eve's Necklace tree that came from Wichita Landscape. Had no idea that every part of it was poisonous or would never have brought it home. Guess it is much safer over at Jerry's place. Still, Larkspur is poisonous, too. And some of that good stuff is growing out front. sigh
Still inclined to believe that dandelions are the best flowers around. Edible--every part of the plant! Wish it were easier to know more about plants like that. sigh
The little wart across the fence threw another ball at Sylvia. She brought it inside. It will go in the trash tomorrow. Little twit!
Ran out of sour cream and thought of using cottage cheese to make a dip using the mixer thing that Jennifer got for me. Put in the ranch dip dressing powder and a tiny bit of yogurt. Turned out great! Dipping sugar snap peas after they have been washed and the strings removed just makes a nice "din-upper." Now if indigestion doesn't get me . . . At least still have a couple of bottles of spicy ginger beer--non-alcoholic.
About another hour before it is time to put my hens up. Won't be long until they want to stay out even longer with more sunshine. Oh well. More time to read.
These two dogs are standing with their feet on the back of the couch. They are looking for "wabbits." You do know, of course, that dogs and cats can see things that people can't see. If we can see more with night vision goggles, they can see twice as much as through those goggles! It's a bit like the hens; they have three types of cones in their eyes that allows them to see movement, colors we can't see, and close up things that we could never notice. God knew what He was doing, no doubt about it.
Well, my desk needs to be clear off just a bit. Somehow my desk has always had the piles--books, papers, more papers, more books, etc. Just tossed a catalog from Duluth's. Why would anyone in their right mind--a woman--wear overalls? And pay $64 for a pair of shorts--no matter how deep the pockets might be? Not that this old girl would ever take up sewing again for something like that, but that kind of money for shorts! Insanity! Oh well. The desk is neater now.
It is my fervent hope that you all find some joy in this day and rest in the night. May God bless you with peace. You are loved.
